As charming as our large New England homes are, there are plenty of good reasons to downsize to a smaller space.

Today, I’m counting down the top five reasons to downsize your Connecticut home!

5. Greater Flexibility

Having a large home full of furniture and storage closets brimming with odds and ends is surprisingly limiting. To make any move seems monumental because it requires sorting through so much stuff. This is why retirees and millennials alike are choosing to live in smaller spaces. Smaller spaces allow you to live with fewer possessions which gives you greater flexibility.

4. To Save Time

Let’s be honest: owning a large Connecticut home can be time-consuming. There’s mowing during the spring and summer, raking during the fall, and snow shoveling during the winter. Not to mention all the time it takes just to keep a large home clean and well-maintained week-in and week-out. Downsizing to a smaller home with a smaller yard can save hours each week, giving you more time to focus on everything you love to do in Connecticut!

3. To Reduce Waste

Reducing waste is one of the best reasons to downsize your Connecticut Home. Heating a large home during the cold Connecticut winters isn’t cheap or efficient. Larger homes also require more furnishings and more upkeep, which may be a waste of time and resources if you’re not using the extra space. Smaller homes allow you to live more efficiently and with less waste.

There may have been a time when your large Connecticut home wasn’t a waste. Maybe you had a few kids living at home and truly needed and used the space. But if you’re finding that the space is no longer serving a purpose, it may be a good time to downsize.

2. To Save Money

Smaller homes are more affordable than larger homes. So if you still have a mortgage, downsizing to a smaller home could dramatically reduce your monthly mortgage payment. Smaller property tax bills, homeowner’s insurance premiums, and maintenance expenses also typically come with a smaller home. And of course there’s the money saved on the utilities required to run a larger home.

Imagine what you could do with the money you save by downsizing! Fund your retirement. Help the kids with college. Launch a business or nonprofit. Buy an investment property. Travel the world.

1. Less Stress

Ultimately, all of these reasons to downsize your Connecticut Home add up to one key reason: less stress. With greater flexibility, more time, less waste, more money, you’re able to reduce the stress of managing a large home. Less stress improves your quality of life. And isn’t that what we all want?
